But that you may see whence arose all this error of those who praise the pleasure of the accusers, I will open the whole thing, and explain the very things which have been said by that discoverer of truth and, as it were, the architect of a happy life. I will open the whole matter to those who praise it, and I will explain what the finder of truth said to the architect of the happy life. For no one despises or hates or runs away from pleasure itself because it is pleasure, but those who, because they love pain, do not know that it is pleasure.

Nor, moreover, is there any one who, because he loves pain, pursues it, wants to gain it, but because such times never happen to him, that he seeks some great pleasure through labor and pain.
